Most commendable of her, and I also honour your emphasising her part in the work which actually sounds more dismal than yours NOW what shall I do about my fluey cold?

I've told you mum - Athena and I being childless, we make sure we cover the unsocial shifts, so staff with children can spend time with them. Before you ask if Athena's suddenly become a surgeon, no she hasn't:: her part of the sacrifice for the common good consists in being on her own at home

It sounds, mum, as though your fellow-patients like the most abysmal stuff that there is. There's good stuff too - David Attenborough's show was wonderful, and akso turned the tide on plastic. BBC 4 is a mine of information. How are you?

I'm seeing a lot of television here on t'ward. Lots of the other patients watch it. Ye gods, it's unspeakably bad. Melodramatic and violent and sensationalised dramas (including the soaps), inane quizzes, noise noise noise, dating shows, unfunny comdy, variety shows of no variety. Moreover, an unhealthy number of the quiz questions are about other TV programmes. Television has become a monster that feasts off itself
