Brilliantly, Tiddles. The job's a good 'un I have nothing to add to what you've said, save only to emphasise what you've already implied, that it's always important to relate the laws you've got to the prevailing social conditions, and see how they match up

Well, attempts to circumvent the abolition of entailment have been made by the use of terms in family trusts. There does seem to be some need, or at least some demand, for entailment or its equivalent under a different name. The government passes laws to stop this too, but it seems that some families manage to find new sorts of terms for their trusts that do the same job. Basically, I'd say that entailment of land has mostly gone, but that it can't be completely eradicated. You've got an irreconcileable difference here between what rich powerful families want to do with their land and what the country, through its democratic processes, wants. That's why entailment won't quite lie down and die. It's a sort of UN-DEAD landholding, like all those undead people in the Dracula myth. How am I doing, Ruth?

Er.....well, entailment was abolished a long time ago. The Law of Property Act 1925, which appears to be the definitive statute for modernising our land law
